Bobservation Convenience store

UPDATE    12/23/11

According to Coach Sean, the store has reopened.

Back in Loveland after a quick trip to see Mickey and Minnie at Disneyland.

Loveland businesses come and go, as I have reported for about a year-and-a-half on this blog.  I appreciate your input on happenings around the Sweetheart city.  Here is one more.

One of my loyal “beeps” (Coach Sean) mentioned that a convenience store/gas station in Loveland looked like it was closed. Since I was packing to go to California, I did not follow up right away.

The closure of the Diamond Shamrock  (Varelo Country Store)  at 126 South Taft is only temporary. I talked to someone at their north Loveland store,  She said their was a water leak problem at the south location.  Work is ongoing, and the south store should be open again by Thanksgiving.

Keep those tips coming in.

Peace, Loveland

Loveland’s Peace in the Park

I got a note from long-time friend Joyce C. about an event in Loveland worthy of your consideration.

Peace in the Park will be on September 17 from noon until 6 pm at the Foote Lagoon near the library and rec center.

This is this event’s fifth annual festival to celebrate peace and community.

Exhibitors include:

  •   the Kroc Institute for International Peace (Joan Kroc was the wife of the founder of McDonalds)
  •  the CSU chapter of Engineers Without Borders
  •  Linus Blankets who will help children and adults make blankets for anyone who might need the
comfort of a blanket such as a child being removed from their home or one in a hospital, a homeless person, or someone at a safe house.
  • Dress a Girl Around the World will model pillowcase dresses made by local volunteers to be sent to countries in Africa.
  •  Many local non-profits, schools, and community organizations will be there to talk about what they are doing to build community and create peace in the lives of the people they serve.

In addition, we will have great music on the lily pad such as a woman who plays Andean music, Cowboy Brad-Estes Park’s own John Denver, Grupo Azatlan, Ferguson High School’s choir, guitar and drum ensemble, a Celtic band
and several other groups.

The food available is all from local caterers and reflects the multi-cultural nature of the festival.

For more info, go to www.peaceinthepark.org.

Bobservations Coming to Loveland?

Looking in my crystal ball about what is going on in Loveland, CO hasn’t worked too well. What does work is listing to my blog followers (my beeps), reading Facebook and driving/walking in various areas of Loveland.

Here is what I am hearing.

Brewpub downtown.

It seems to be true.  The downtown microbrewery was mentioned recently in a Downtown Loveland
Assn. newsletter.   Over the past few months, I kept hearing that it was far off in the future. Now, it may be sooner.

The best guess, and I do mean guess at this point, is that the beer factory will be located on Fourth Street west of the railroad tracks.

New grocery store

Every few weeks I get an email or comment about rumors of a natural food grocer coming to town.  At
various times, it is Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, etc.

Now it looks like a place called the Crunchy Grocer (all  with fresh organics) is a good possibility   They seem to be setting up at the site of the old Ferguson High School near East Eisenhower and Monroe.  Wouldn’t that be great!

Fish in Loveland?

Not so fast.  Long John Silver’s was slated to come to Loveland at some point.  They were going to be located in the big
(empty for a long time) building at on Lincoln, north of 29th Street.   Old-timers will tell you that
is where Four Bs restaurant used to be located.

The owners of Long John Silver’s in Greeley say they will not be coming to Loveland any time soon.
Maybe if the economy picks up, it could happen.  Don’t hold your breath.

Anyone else have any tidbits they are hearing?

Loveland gets Smashed

Get ready Loveland, there is a new burger in town.  SMASHBURGER I was fortunate to be the guest of Smashburger’s founder Tom Ryan and his great staff today.  Tom and the local franchisers hosted us a day before Loveland’s Smashburger restaurant opens. A good crowd got to sample some of the delicious food that Smashburgers has to offer.

I must confess that I have never been to a Smashburgers, even though there is one in Fort Collins. Tom Ryan said the company is four years old, and has 17 outlets in the state.  In addition to the one in the Fort, there are is also a Smashburger in  Colorado Sprins, Grand Junction, and some in the Denver metro area.  Ryan does not rule out the possiblity of more to come on Greeley and another location in Fort Collins in the future.

The “smash” in a Smashburger comes from the fact that the cook puts most of his weight on a 1/3 or 1/2 pound fresh (never frozen) lump of Angus beef.  It was impressive to see a demo of this, and then get to taste a piece of the burger right after it is quickly cooked.  So good!

I had an American burger but was tempted to try the Colorado burger (with mild green chilis, cheddar and pepper jack cheese, all on a chipolte bun.   I added haystack onions to mine as my side but sampled the  sampled the smashfries with rosemary, garlic and onion, thanks to my impromptu dining partners .(Rob Smith, Coach Sean McCarthy and his wife, and Russell Fruits from Grimm Bros)

The veggine frites are fun too.  Flash fried carrots and asparagus is a healthy side item they offer.

Check the Smashburger menu for many other items including a black bean burger, hot dogs, salads and much more.  I have to end by noting that they have shakes, made with Hagen-Dazs ice cream, too.  The shakes come in the standard vanilla, chocolate and strawberry but they have some surprising ones too.  The ones made with Butterfinger candy bars or Nutter Butters are something I will try again.

So, I have a new favorite burger place in Loveland.  Go by starting tomorrow and try it for yourself.  Loveland Smashburger is located on east Eisenhower (where Earle’s Flowers was) across from Wal-Mart.
